Efficacy of prayer

Recently, on a Next Door post, a person asked for prayers for their adult son that was battling Covid. Hundreds of responses declaring prayers for the man. Tragically, 3-4 days later the post was updated that the man had died. Now, dozens of responses claiming "prayers for your family".
If the prayers for the son were ineffective, why pray for the surviving family?
