I’m a Christian and have listening to my fair share of evangelical teachings, read christian books, and have been to mass plenty. A frequently recurring theme/story is the one of a lowly pastor/evangelical living his or her life teaching about God. At some point, they hear from him that they must give away their car, house, or something else of value. Usually when this happens, they give it away to some random couple that God tells them about and then they always subsequently meet a random stranger or friend that suddenly gifts them a car, money, or house (jets even) out of the blue because God tells them to. This strange phenomenon usually results in bigger and bigger items of value being given away and received on a whim. While I appreciate the sentiment and lesson behind these stories, I often wonder if any of them are true. The skeptical side of me thinks that these people tell these stories to promote themselves, their church, or their teachings and that none of that stuff ever actually happened. At the same time, the other side of me wants to believe them because if so, thats evidence of inherent goodness in this world and a bigger force that inspires us to see our humanity and give with purpose, which is definitely not a bad thing to believe in. Usually the only thing they’re willing to share in terms of evidence is their word. Is there any evidence at all to support that these stories could be true? Even in isolated cases? Really curious to know.
