Lately it seems there has been a fair bit of drama regarding people judging other denominations - both in terms of doctrine and in terms of the denomination's position within Christianity as a whole. Considering that there have been bans handed out, only to be rescinded, I feel like this is an issue that warrants discussion, and perhaps clarification from the mod team. I think the most succinct means of phrasing the question on my mind is: What forms of voicing our disagreement with a denomination's beliefs or practices are acceptable on this sub, and what forms are unacceptable?
There are obviously varying degrees of disagreement, and varying ways to express that disagreement. Some are perfectly acceptable, while others cross the line into being detrimental to healthy discourse. Here are some examples of phrases that I have noticed pop up in the sub that display the various types of disagreement:
- "Those who affirm homosexuality are denying the word of God"
- "The Catholic teaching on justification contradicts sola fide and thus is antithetical to the gospel"
- "Penal Substitutionary Atonement is a heresy"
- "Mormons are not Christians because they deny the Trinity"
- "The Catholic Church is a false church"
- "The aniconism in Reformed churches denies the humanity of Christ"
- "Homosexuality is an abomination"
- "Jehovah's witnesses are part of a cult"
- "The God of Calvinism is a moral monster"
- "People who oppose marriage equality are hateful bigots"
This is just a sampling of the types of sentiments I've seen expressed on this sub. I feel like some are appropriate and some aren't. What are your thoughts, /r/Christianity?
- Are there specific traits or qualities that an assessment of another denomination or belief has which make it acceptable or unacceptable?
- Is it possible to formulate a distinction between healthy and unhealthy discourse?
- At a moderation level, what sorts of assessments are considered banable offenses?
