With the Israeli-Palestine conflict raging, I’ve been hearing sentiments (not solely online) from Jews, Muslims, and non-religious folk, and they all have something in common: They’re hoping for the destruction of another. They’re praying or hoping for it - for real, terrible suffering.
Ive been at a loss lately, with these incessant prayers for harm. Here’s a few examples of comments with many upvotes: “On the first day of judgment, I’d like to request from Allah a first class seat watching Netanyahu get tortured in hell.” “I’m praying that everyone involved in the suffering of Palestinians stays unbelievers so they burn in hell.” “I will not forgive. I will seek God’s judgment.” I’ve seen some mean shit spewed on this subreddit but nothing like this, or at least it’s v rare.
I’ve been an avid supporter of interfaith relationships, still am, but I’m starting to question how peaceful those of certain religious groups really are. I’m feeling paranoid like I’m becoming xenophobic.
I’m not sure what I’m looking for. Words of encouragement I think. Perspective.
Few disclaimers for those Redditors who jump to conclusions: Yes, I know these are sentiments from oppressed groups. Doesn’t give them the right to pray for a destruction of each other and there is plenty of literature from (mostly christian imo) authors in the MIDST of oppression / borderline genocide who didn’t default to hatred. Yes, I know not all Christian’s are this loving. Yes, I know not all Jews / Atheists / Muslims are this hateful. Yes, I know the internet does not encapsulate the entirety of any given religion. Yes, I know the crusades happened.
