Christians, what is your explanation when someone uses the argument of carbon dating or the half-life of things such as uranium when expressing the age of the earth and the universe?
Post Body

I believe in God and I believe in science but to a degree on both.

Let me explain: I was raised in a Wesleyan/ non-denominational household growing up. There was a simplicity to it. I also had a huge fascination in science fiction. As I grew older I dove deeper into certain aspects of my faith and then turned my sci-fi love into a means of understanding certain things in the world of scientific discovery and technology. But I developed reservations in both things.

For one, I eventually discovered not taking all of the Bible literally. I am no expert but I do believe metaphors is a big theme throughout both the Old and New Testament. But I also believe there is fact behind most of it and believe Jesus Christ did die for our sins and that God is the one and true God. I cannot fathom creatures of our intellect existing for no purpose other than to rot in the ground at the end of life or the complexity of this world along with the vastness of the universe simply happening by chance from a big bang. Someone created it all.

Onto the aspect of evolution which I feel like can exist in some areas but not others. For one, why is it that if we (homo sapiens) existed for over 300,000yrs or however long it’s claimed, did we only achieve such technological marvels in the span of only a thousand years (give or take a few hundred years). And even then, why is the boom of the technological age even smaller? For a species so old, why is all the scientific discovery and technology that has given us this knowledge only on the radar in the last few hundred years? It doesn’t make sense to me.

In regards to the carbon dating and half-life arguments of elements and such: Who’s to say each and every aspect of those elements and the varying periods of their existence wasn’t all put in place when God created the earth? He could have created uranium and the varying age of it all the way down to lead scattered throughout the world in varying stages of its decay.

From the point of creation that is true, no? He created everything so why not create everything is various stages of its existence too.

Now, another reason on why I do not take all of the Bible literally: some aspects of blind faith can turn to ignorance of what we as humans have achieved in the medical world. I see stories of parents putting 100% faith in God healing their sick children over taking them to the hospital for things that those doctors/ PAs/ nurses, etc can fix. I do not think turning to science for the sake of your health is evil. That’s not to say that all things in life are that easy. In the mid 2000’s my company in the Marines was given a Malaria pill vaccine. It had dire effects on Marines and almost killed several. I use this example because the Covid one is too hot of a topic and I do not wish to debate that. Things happen even when we try to do good is what I’m getting at, even in science. I’m sure there are other examples of science being wrong and maybe that’s not the best example but it’s one I experienced. Ultimately nothing is perfect or always right.

So with all of this said, what are your arguments in defense of the age of earth in regards to faith vs science? I always appreciate being corrected through criticisms and enlightened. I do not know it all. After all to err is human.
