Was God's seal of approval on the American Revolution? Most American Christians have a very high opinion of the Founding Fathers, the American Revolution, the Constitution, democracy, American ideals, etc. But were their actions completely biblical? The Bible instructs us to live peaceably among all men. It tells us to turn the other cheek when we are struck. We are to endure persecution and count it joy. Jesus rebuked Peter when he physically attacked his captor with a weapon.
We are to follow the laws of our land unless those laws are demanding that we do something contrary to God's law. Even then, our refusal to bow the knee to the government should be civil and peaceful. We weren't called to be crusaders. We weren't called to be violent revolutionaries. My impressions is that if we are going to be persecuted or imprisoned for our faith, we are supposed to place our hands behind our backs and let them cuff us. That's what the apostles did.
Can anyone offer some perspective?
