Origin of hell

Can someone help me pinpoint the exact phrasings that were used to describe hell, chapter and verse from the Hebrew Bible?
Doing some research for a project.
Honestly, it's about common misconceptions about religion. Specifically the overwhelming belief that God punishes so severely, in contrast to the all loving God full of forgiveness.
So far I've been using the NIV, not the best choice I know for original texts, but I use some online bibles as well.
