Is Anal Sex a Sin?
Post Body

This was a tough one for me... at first. When I was dating my husband, during one evening of passion he asked if he could slip it in the backdoor. While I had always considered this an "exit only" option and a sin, it took me more than a moment of thought before I decided that this these waters could be tested.

Upon insertion, I nearly shot out of the bed. Backdoor attempt #1 failed within 10 seconds and the backdoor returned to "Exit Only" status. I could not fathom why my husband had this fascination with backdoor. Sure putting a finger there during sex was pleasant. The ole' "shocker" during foreplay would warm me up nicely. But all attempts to put anything back there other than a finger were met with...

Well let's say that it was not looking like it (anal) was going to be on the menu.

Back to the act in a moment...

So does the Bible say that anal is wrong? Typically when this topic come up, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is quoted. "[note, not a Biblical quote] God struck down Sodom and Gomorrah because they were doing sodomy" is the common thing I hear from Christians. This was my patented answer as well when I was in my 20 somethings, as a good Catholic and newly married wife (first marriage). My answer was, you are not putting that thing in my backdoor because that's sodomy and the Bible says sodomy is a sin! And its gross...

Sadly for my backdoor, my husband figured out that this was not true. The Bible does not say anything about anal sex (within marriage is often an assumption to this being true). What!?!? - I know Sodomy is bad! Sodomy is anal! Sodomy makes you pooh funny the next day!!!!

So to quote Bill Murry in Stripes, "That's the facts jack"...

The Bible doesn't really say much about anal sex. It does address forcible anal rape of a man by another man as a sin in Genesis 19.

My poor backdoor screams, "what about Sodomy!".

In the story of Sodomy and Gomorrah, a large group of men sought to gang rape two angels who had taken the form of men. The "presumption" was that the gang of men wanted to have forcible anal sex with the angels. But what about the term sodomy?

The term Sodomy in Biblical parlance and as a definition of the time meant, "the sin of Sodom". It was describing the wickedness of Sodom, and was not describing anal sex. It was thousands of years later when the definition changed to its modern day meaning where "to sodomize" means to perform anal sex on someone. Thus sodomy, as the modern terms describes it, was not a definition from Genesis 19 condemning anal sex, but rather it described the nature of the people of the town of Sodom.

Fast forward to today. Being his fantasy and waiting for years, on our wedding night, I switched positions and surprised him with a backdoor experience. It wasn't pleasant, but boy did he ever go coocoo about it. Over time I started to warm up to the idea when I realized several things. One - you have to learn how to do it. Two - you have to prepare for it. Three - it can be pleasurable. There are a lot of nerve endings that can provide pleasure in and around that little backdoor.

I will save the "how-to" guide for another time.

Bottom line with anal sex... if it feels good, it's perfectly ok to do it!

In boiling down the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the locals intended to rape the angels. I would imagine that God would be pretty pissed about men assaulting His angels. Truth be told, the sin of homosexuality which is often associated with this story has no basis in scripture. There are interpretations where God was angered simply by the lack of hospitality. The story is a contrast in how you treat guests and strangers showing how gracious Lot was compared to the other inhabitants of Sodom. Jewish and Christian tradition always calls for the gracious hospitality to guests and to help strangers.

Recreational sex is about pleasure and not pain. So a comment like this is out of alignment with how most people feel who participate in this.
