A Brief Look at Why Sex Outside of Marriage can be Holy

This post however is meant to be a brief and practical look at this subject as it relates to the lifestyle. I've written about this subject in an academic manner elsewhere with citations to support my points for those interested. Can a married person have sex with another and not sin in doing so? The answer is yes (sometimes). But what about adultery? Well that word in the Bible doesn't mean what modern English speakers mean by it.

Adultery meant to steal sexually a woman that belonged to another man (whether his adult daughter, wife, or even mother if she was under his care and authority). It meant to have illicit secretive sex with them without his consent or paying a dowry. The concept of paying a dowry is foreign to many Westerners but was quite important back in the biblical cultures, and even in many places today. One needed permission from the male who was over the woman before sleeping with her. The biblical word for adultery (moicheia) is heavily rooted in this concept.

The word was a crude word which literally meant "pissing" or more so "immoral pissing" It was a slang for immoral ejaculation. It was always an offense against a 3rd party (a man that was in charge of the care of a woman "in his house"). But what if there was consent? Would it then be adultery? Generally speaking, the answer is "no." It would not be considered adultery. Thus, if one's partner consents it isn't adultery.

Is this the best choice for everyone? No. There is potential for problems, complications, and sin. Caution, communication, and prayer for wisdom should take place first and throughout. Nevertheless, there can be good things that come out of it besides just sexual pleasure for oneself. Better communication with one's spouse and being honest about one's feelings has fostered intimacy for some. The relief of sexual repression can help people prevent marital and personal issues, or falling to temptation. One can also be a blessing to others by sharing God's gift of sex and enjoy the friendships that come from such. More could be said on this subject so feel free to add, share, or ask more in the comments about your thoughts and experiences.
