Post Body

So me and a friend of mine that knows sign language went to McDonalds for some lunch. We decided to do a mobile order because we we're in a hurry.

We pull up to the curb, tell them we had arrived, and received our food. Shortly after starting to eat a man approached our car and showed us a card. The first thing it said was "Hello, I am deaf.". This is the conversation in sign language that followed:

Key:

DG = Deaf Gentleman

F = My Friend

Me = Well, me.

F: Are you deaf?

DG responds with the sign for Yes in ASL instead of shaking his head (that sign is a knocking gesture) From this response F was certain he was actually deaf.

F: Ok, how can I help you?

DG: I'm very hungry and I don't have enough money to buy food for my family.

F: Well, I have $10, so the least I can do is buy a $10 Bundle here at McDonalds, does that help?

(That bundle consists of 2 cheeseburgers, 2 10 peice McNuggets, and a Medium Fry, which is actually quite a steal.)

DG: Sorry, but I can't accept anything lower than $20.

F: I'm sorry too, because all I have is $10. The bundle really is the best way to go for this amount.

DG then pointed to the Golden Corral accross the street from us.

DG: I was hoping to take my family there for dinner.

F: I'm sorry, but the least I can do is give you $10.

DG: What about your friend? Does he have anything to spare?

Of course F had to tell me what he said like an interpreter because I don't know any ASL.

Me: Tell him "I have $5 to give you."

F tells DG what I said in ASL.

DG: That still isn't $20. You guys are probably having more trouble than I am. Have a good day.

DG was clearly trying to guilt-trip us. After waiting for us to possibly change our minds from the attempted guilt-trip, he then left and walked accross the street.

Overall, it was a pretty interesting encounter. I don't know whether to feel bad for him or not. He was deaf, but I feel like he was exploiting his disability for money. However I hope he's does well in the future.
