Post Body

I see a lot of posts about creative people getting asked to do stuff for free, or people selling things, but I haven't seen a thread about this, so I thought I would start one.

I've been an IT person for 20 years, and what I get, is when people find out that I know about computers and want me to come to their house to fix it for free. Here are some examples of it:

  1. Just recently had a guy who texted me wanting me to look at his laptop because it wasn't working right. I told him I would look at it then tell him what was wrong (first mistake). I discovered that his HDD was full of physical errors and couldn't even be reformatted. So I told him he had to go buy a new one, and that I was willing to do the work, but he would need to buy the HDD and then pay me about $50 for my time. He told me that for $50 I should include the HDD as he was pretty sure I had extras laying around I could give him - preferably a SSD. I told him to find someone else.
  2. A few years ago I got a call from an ex boyfriend of my mom's. He wanted me to look at his PC because he changed his password and couldn't remember the new password. I told him I could crack his password but it would take a couple days and that I would charge him just $50 for my time. He said he needed it faster and cheaper, so he would just take it to Geek Squad. When he found out how much Geek Squad was going to charge him, he tried to get me to do it, and I said no thanks.
  3. This one is my favorite. I had been the IT person at a small company but had left the company. They had a serious fault with their Exchange server and since I was the one who set it up he wanted to know if I could come in on a weekend and help fix it. He offered me pizza.

Any other good stories out there?
