Greetings r/ChineseLanguage!
It has come to our attention that there were many polls and discussions on Traditional vs Simplified script on the sub over the past few weeks, and in some cases, becoming quite heated under threads that were clearly not meant for such discussions. (Such as this thread here)
While we know that majority of the community did not intend to make any offensive remarks and merely wanted a constructive and peaceful discussion, we did notice a handful of users clearly making rather unpleasant remarks. These include, but are not limited to:
- mainland simlplified Chinese (zh-cn) is worse than crap
- Both Taiwan and HK use "this kind of Chinese", I think it hints something about "the other kind of Chinese"
The sub is an open community for everyone to discuss about different things related to Chinese learning. We mods ourselves also came from various backgrounds and have our own preferences in what script we use. Hence, we have always welcomed any meaningful discussions on the pros and cons of each script (eg. usability, efficiency when writing etc).
However, welcoming meaningful discussions does not equate to acceptance of disrespectful and hateful comments, be it about the script choice or anything else. We firmly believe that one can talk constructively about any topic without the need to be rude, disrespectful and discriminating. We also believed that these discussions can be carried out without the need to bring in politics (eg. CCP, Taiwan etc).
As such, we are posting this to re-emphasize our stance on this. Posts/polls/discussions on Traditional vs Simplified should be meaningful and respectful. That is to say, any content merely stating Traditional vs Simplified without giving contexts like 'which is easier to learn' or 'what are the differences' will be removed from now on. Any remarks or comments about this comparison that are disrespectful and discriminatory (eg. 'othering' or scorning of one particular script) will also be removed and result in a ban.
Let me reiterate this once more. We are not removing or banning because we are siding with one particular script, but because the content has become so disrespectful and vulgar that they add no value to the discussion at all. If you don't even have the basic courtesy to respect others and behave yourself in a discussion, then we have no choice but to remove you from the discussion.
Should there be any questions or queries, feel free to leave a comment here, or send us a modmail.
Thank you for your understanding.
