Where can I find the strength to learn all these characters?

I've been studying for more than a year but I feel I've barely scratched the surface. A few hundred characters is at once overwhelming and barely scratching the surface. Whenever I feel I've learnt something I just forget it again in a couple of weeks. It's getting tedious but I want to just power through it.
