Question to long time learners: what was the biggest advantage you've had in life (unexpected or hoping for) by your knowledge of the language?

Mine isn't great, but there have been times when I couldn't speak to an elderly shopkeeper at a family store, so I used my terrible Mandarin to get clarification, much to their suprise because I don't look like someone that would speak it at all.
Any cool stories? Or opportunities?
