About four months ago, my 1 yr old Chi, Daisy, broke her front right dewclaw. A vet trimmed it down and it grew back relatively soon after. Two weeks ago, she broke it again, and the vet trimmed it down again. This week, she broke her front left dewclaw, and I was advised to get her dewclaws removed.
I have a very trustworthy vet doing the procedure, but I’m really worried if I’m doing the right thing for Daisy. The vet explained in great detail that the recovery is long and will restrict most movement for two to three weeks with lots of bandage changes and medicine for her. I know the broken dewclaws hurt her and that this would take care of the problem from happening, but I’m still worried. Maybe just looking for some reassurance or advice from those who have experienced this themselves?
To ease your mind about this happening because her nails aren’t being trimmed enough - she goes to the groomers regularly and gets them all trimmed. She’s never had an issue with her back dewclaws, it’s only the front, and we have no idea how she breaks them, especially with them being as short as they can be without hurting her.
Thank you for taking time to read and respond. Right now her procedure is set up for April 13th.
