Both seem very nice- dont get me wrong and absolutely no hate!
Comparing Hinsdale to it's neighboring town Oak Brook- Oak Brook seems to be the more desirable suburb. Not trying to bash but I just don't get why Hinsdale seems to have a way higher average home price 800k vs 1.2M.
Could someone elaborate? Is it because of Hinsdale Central Highschool? Otherwise, I cant really understand because often the homes in Oak Brook seem more unique vs the stockier older style homes in Hinsdale, both seem to have large and nice homes, Oak Brook seems to have more yard space, additionally I feel Oak Brook is also more central to activities, dining, and other major suburbs. Finally Oak Brook seems to have way more natural parks and preserves vs Hinsdale's more grid like suburbia.
Hinsdale is more walkable, right next to Metra, and as you said is more small town like with smaller lots. A lot of people like that versus the sprawl and relative isolation of houses in Oak Brook. Oak Brook is only central to anything if you drive there, while Hinsdale has that plus its own downtown and excellent schools within a few blocks.
So if you have no intention of ever seeing your neighbors and want a massive house, Oak Brook is perfect. If you want a more community feel then Hinsdale is the way.
Also, in my opinion the 1960s-1980s housing stock of Oak Brook is generally ugly and depressing, but to each their own.
