Do people ever cheat so not to lose themselves in the relationship?

I throw myself into relationships, every single part of me, and it becomes so overwelming. I lose my spark. A bad trait of mine I know. I've found that by having these discreet encounters when I am in a relationship, I can then pull myself together and not lose my independence. Does anyone ever feel this way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
