Preferred alternative chat platform

Ok, I like to chat occasionally and meet new people. What is the preferred app everyone uses other than Reddit. I get people that want to use WhatsApp, Kik, etc.. What is the best and what are the risks with each? I have definitely encountered the catfishes and scammers out there, so I want to make sure to avoid whichever works best for them to do bad things.
