Any luck / tips on using GPTPro / Claude / similar for comparing and extracting table data from PDFs?

Post Body

I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to get GPT and Claude to compare two PDFs with "tables". The idea is to read the files and do a detailed comparison. What is missing, added, modified between files/tables and then do Q&A and calculations.

The table data is relatively easy to visually parse and would be straightforward with a pre-processor or human copy/paste as CSV/Excel/Sheets.

I'm trying to automate a workflow, but GPT and Claude have only been able to answer summary info from the files, even with detailed instruction prompts outlining table format, headers, etc.

I could try to break the file into separate images and process those, but that's another preprocessor step.

Anyone with experience on these types of tasks?

These LLMs don't work very well with visually complex PDFs as you already well know. I use thepi.pe to get the data out & it works for tables as well -- it's free & open source for any nerds that are interested as well
