Fact Checking vs A.I. Sentience

Was watching a recent video about A.I.ā€˜s problem with accuracy/fact-checking done by the YouTuber Marques Brownlee.

A point he makes is ā€œfundamentally, the AI doesnā€™t know if itā€™s telling the truth or not, it does not understand that, itā€™s not part of the model. What weā€™re seeing is it taking our inputs, and creating outputs based on related words that our most likely to go together. Itā€™s not forming a sentence like humans do, itā€™s generating a new sentenceā€¦. Itā€™s not sentient, it doesnā€™t understand what itā€™s saying, and so itā€™s definitely not fact-checking itselfā€.

To those of you who believe in AIā€™s present sentience, what bearing do you think this observation has on your belief? To those of you who donā€™t believe in AIā€™s present sentience, do you agree with this statement?
