To start off with I saw the OG Charmed when it was airing on the WB. I remember the switch from airing on Thurs to Sunday and the big gasp it was that such a prime time show was being moved to Sundays. Remember the promo previews for when they were going to Valhalla. Remember reading the magazines when Shannon left. Heck, it was one of the first shows I streamed on Netflix when I got to college. I've seen every episode half a dozen times over.
I generally have an initial dislike for a blank concept of people fated to be powerful without earning it. Now don't get me wrong, I loved the Halliwells, but the truth is as Charmed Ones the OG didn't mean anything other than the completion of Melinda Warren's prophecy when she was burned at the stake that from her line powerful women would be witches until it culminated in the birth of 3 sisters more powerful than any other witch known. It's a cool concept, but the Hallowell sisters didn't do anything to earn being Charmed. However, I would state that I didn't care that they didn't earn the Charmed title because the OG's level of fleshing out the sisters' relationships was just so powerful. Being charmed didn't make them special, being sisters and their sisterhood did.
With this week's episode revealing that the first charmed ones in the reboot came about because they chose to be a sisterhood and thus implying that the girls plus Kaela are also Charmed because they are choosing to be a sisterhood I actually really liked that and to me felt more meaningful about being Charmed. These girls now like the reboot originals didn't have to bond and create a sisterhood, but due to issues and a shared goal of goodness they create a coven and a sisterhood making them powerful beyond measure (which is arguable for either version of Charmed since every week somehow another demon was always more powerful, but hey that's what you take with a 22 episode a season show... Cough the Flashcough)
What I wish the reboot would have done more with explaining how the Charmed ones and the various iterations came to be is "why this set of sisters?" I wish s2 had explored Macy pushing away from her sisters after the whole Source and them having to go into witchness protection program. I wish it had all culminated in her feeling like an outsider and the season mostly focusing on them rebuilding their sisterhood and coven and reminding themselves and the audience that these girls who only came together as 3 judt a year before were committed to each other, to sisterhood, and to being Charmed.
You can see that Joey tried to course correct and flesh that out with Mel, Maggie, and Kaela but it's truly a shame s2 and s3 had so many foundational issues that 13 episodes trying to get back on track wasn't enough.
