I keep seeing people on the internet nutting in their jeans whenever someone mentions Shrek 2, or even Shrek as a franchise, and start talking about how Shrek 2 is a "masterpiece" or "the perfect sequel".
We get it you fucks, you watched the Schaffrillas video and now you feel the need to regurgitate some guy's opinion on a movie you haven't seen since you were 11. I don't even dislike Schaffrillas, he's a funny guy who clearly knows his stuff about animated movies, and often I find what he says valuable, hell I don't even think Shrek 2 is a bad movie, it's quite good. I like it.
But holy shit shut up. Shrek 2 is not the "greatest sequel of all time". It's not even in the fucking conversation, this is Terminator 2, Aliens and the ilk we're talking about, not fucking Shrek 2, which has not had nearly the critical or cultural impact outside of niche internet circles to make a claim about it being the "definition of what a sequel should be" or whatever the fuck.
Shrek 2 isn't even better than Shrek 1. You wanna talk about an incredible movie, all memes aside? The original Shrek. It was a long time ago so I'm sure many don't remember but the degree to which that movie was subversive, the iconic nature of so many scenes and lines (how many one-liners or even scenes can the average person name from Shrek 2?), and just how clever it is were unprecedented in western animation. Films in it's genre to this day are STILL basically riffing off the ideas and tropes it introduced to the animated film market. Shrek is a movie I will happily shake hands with you on being a masterpiece for its genre. AT the end of the day Shrek 2 is just a pretty good sequel which is all it needed to be.
"The giant gingerbread dying is one of the saddest deaths in cinematic history" what are you SMOKING? This isn't even like, the "Gingerbread Man" that is barely a character in Shrek to begin with, it's his dumbass cousin. It literally isn't even a real character. Who the fuck really cares beyond a basic "well that's sad" level?
"The fairy god mother singing I Need A Hero is the greatest sequence in animated film history, it's better than the studio version" SHUT UP. It just isn't. It's like, a decent cover. Anytime I see someone express this sentiment (which is often, depressingly), I just assume their favourite album is the Minecraft soundtrack or The Marshall Mathers LP 2 or some other shit. Just an absolutely psychotic thing to believe that this is better than the Bonnie Tyler version.
TL;DR: I like Shrek 2, it's a great movie! It is not one of the best sequels ever made. It isn't even the best Shrek movie. Don't just say something as if it's a fact because you saw a guy on YouTube say it. Thanks.
