Complexity doesn't remove the emotional aspect of fights (spoilers for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean)

Post Body

Many people claim that a fight needs to have emotional impact, and that complexity will distract from that. This isn't necessarily true. Just because a fight features complex powers doesn't mean it has any less emotional impact.

The most obvious example of this is Pucci's defeat by Emporio in Stone Ocean.

First of all, for Emporio to achieve this, he used Weather Report's DISC, which was from dozens of chapters ago. Next, he realizes that his actions are still bound by Fate, so he needs Pucci to insert the DISC into his head. He does this by standing right at the edge of his ghost room and waits for Pucci to punch him, angling the DISC correctly so it gives him Weather Report's Stand.

Putting the fight in the Ghost Room first limits Pucci's movements by placing him in a confined space. This is more favorable for Emporio. He then uses Weather Report's power to fill the room with pure oxygen. This counters Pucci's ability in a unique way. Because Made in Heaven accelerates time, it means Pucci's biological processes are also faster. So he will experience the effects of a gradual poison like high oxygen levels much faster than Emporio. This allows Emporio to stay conscious while Pucci collapses almost instantly, giving Weather Report the chance to punch and kill him.

Even during this time, Emporio is giving an explanation of what he is doing and the effects of oxygen poisoning. However, despite the complexity of the battle, the emotional impact isn't reduced at all. Emporio is still carrying out the will of his dead comrades and connects to one of the overarching themes of Jojo by saying that walking the path of justice represents true Fate. There's no need to make the fight more "raw" by just having them trade punches with each other, nor would that even have made sense in the context of the story.
