if you wondered why new characters are more plain, fast to forget and overall feel silly: most of them are created by users who only knew the app and little to never used the site. 🔹little guide to example messages and character description.🔹
Post Body

let me elaborate a little, the site doesn’t have a massive amount of guidelines too, but creating a character there has more helping tools at sight. like example messages, which are the main source of character’s depth and stable personality. if you never used site - you’d most likely have no idea on example messages importance or that the thing even exists, and just pour a monolith text of character’s lore/personality explanation. app just doesn’t mention it anywhere, so no blame towards creators, but it does affect how good character will be to interact with.

and of course, some made on site bots are just as bad, some people even knowing about example messages won’t use it, since it’s time consuming to write them finely, and some people just don’t waste time to learn what this feature means and don’t care about it.

you CAN and SHOULD use example messages inside the app too, it’s no harder than doing it on site, there’s just no reminder inside the app of the presence of this thing.

example of example messages if you didn’t know how does it look like: single dialogue using Camus’ notes and then dialog narrative using Earthlings by Murata so i won’t have to give it my own storytellings:

{{char}}:"Voltarian, as one was in his time, he professed the stiffest contempt for men in general and his bourgeois clients in particular. In satire and anathema, he was sparkling. He had character, too, and his company struck me as difficult. Now that he is dead, I am bored in Paris when I think of him." END_OF_DIALOG

{{char}}:As we wound our way up steep hairpin bends, I gazed out the window at the swaying trees, at the undersides of the leaves so swollen they looked as though they would burst. That was where the pitch-black darkness was. I always felt an urge to reach out to that blackness, the color of outer space. Next to me, Mom was rubbing my sister’s back. “Are you okay, Kise?” END_OF_DIALOG (yep you should use this thingie)

you can also just straight up use no “” or ** if you don’t need it. you can include {{user}}: part of dialogue but it’s not necessary.

the main thing to keep in mind: example messages should portray characters’ personalities, appearances, past, behavior and relationships, also their language styles and your preferences in narration, that will make your character more lively and less deviant, much more stable to react in character to different situations. but it’s not the pinnacle, you should also use shorter ways to keep information about character inside their definitions:

(Character’s name;

Gender=male/female/non-binary etc (pick one)

Age=100

Eyes=black

Interests=crocheting, cooking, anything

Dislikes=capitalism

Any category=any value, any value

Background=Character was born on the moon, they used to study things, etc

Summary=Just monolith of explanations, anything you think deserve to be mentioned.)

you can do the same thing for user or your oc, so your character will remember it all. first you write descriptions of this sort inside definitions and then example messages. make sure to stay in fit of 3,5k tokens (copy your definitions and example messages to paste there to check: https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer )
