The Bixi is a mythological Chinese being that is the monumental dragon turtle at the rear of the actual grave. There is clearly many other symbolic and mythological beings guarding this grave, but I am nowhere near familiar enough with Chinese culture to explain them all. Hopefully someone else can in the comments!
And while you’re explaining things to me, I have a question but I’m not exactly sure how to ask it. I’m curious if someone who knows more about Chinese culture could explain this to me. The way that the planted environment is built out around the grave distinctly reminds me of ways that I see homes in the area built out. It is subtle details, like the placement of gates, the shape of paths, the direction that doors/entrances face, etc. perhaps it is influenced by feng shui or something similar? It’s quite subtle, but when I walk through neighborhoods where many homes were built by/for Chinese immigrants, I notice these features are nearly universal, even amongst different architectural styles. I even see traditional Western styles, e.g Tudor, re-imagined to include these numerous subtle features. Anyone know what the heck I’m talking about and where I can learn more? I’m super fascinated!
