How do the new 10x upgrades work?

So I have plenty of metabits to buy a couple of the newer 10x Mesozoic and beyond upgrades but I was wondering if it updates past progress. Like I'm on rank 26 Mesozoic, will I get the boost from those past ranks I've completed or only the ranks I pass going forward. I want to wait to buy them or rank up either Mesozoic or Beyond until I know.
