Is It Wrong to Attend Mass If I Don't Believe?
Post Body

I'm almost 40 and I've been an atheist since I was a young boy. My family is Catholic but I wasn't raised in the church because my stepfather was Protestant. I've been having a mild midlife crisis and the idea of attending mass has appealed to me lately. I was never confirmed and I don't believe in the teachings of the church in any literal sense but I've always found the piety of Catholic friends and family to be inspiring. I'd like to start attending mass at our neighborhood church but I'm worried it will seem disrespectful to just go for the sense of community and the rituals. Obviously, I wouldn't take communion since I'm not a true Catholic but I really want to just be there and let go of my ego and problems for a few hours a week.

Is that wrong? Hypocritical? Disrespectful to the parishioners? Any advice greatly appreciated.
