Recently I've come across some perspectives from some priests who came against the whole idea of action movies/video games with violent content. They argued that since violence in real life is only a regretable necesity, it should not be turned into entertainment, like when players get any kind of satisfaction when killing enemies. They made no distinction between games where the player is a heroic charecter or a crinimal, for them the same moral problem applied. Another issue that this reminded me of was some reports by people who reported enjoying this media because it provided the vicarious feeling of physical throwing punches or swinging and slashing swords on enemies, and the physical feeling of per felt good to them. I asked someone who looked into traditional Catholic thought a lot, and argued that these thigns wern't problematic as a- the violence is ficitonal, and b usually it is in story done for a heroic cause and thus enjoying the violence in this way is not wrong. Now which of these perspectives would you say is most refelctive of traditional Catholic moral thought, I understand that there is almost certainly no explict statment and these matters but what would the broad contours and directions of Catholic thought lead you to in an answer? Your thoughts are appreciated.
