Matchmaker Form Enforcements Part 2: Your ghosting won't be banned. We'll just make it public knowledge. Let us explain.

Part 1 of New Enforcements here.

So I was thinking and praying about what ought to be done about ghosting, if anything.

See, the new bans are in place because certain actions contribute to allocative inefficiency in the matchmaking process, and my objective is to maximize efficiency, i.e. get the largest number of optimal pairings as possible. Not responding/saying you can't date at the moment reduces efficiency because no chance was given to your match, and they could've been matched with someone else with whom they could have had a chance. And, this has an effect on other pairings as well, so the shockwaves could be large.

Ghosting, however, isn't inefficient in that sense. A chance was given, but now they decided it wouldn't work out, which is normal. The only issue is that ghosting can be rude.

I don't like creating too many rules - I'm a very laissez-faire mod. At the same time, this is a Catholic subreddit, and we want to promote holiness. Ghosting isn't exactly the holiest of behaviors at times, though it can be necessary (say, creepiness or threatening messages). And a lot of people really dislike it.

So here is what we will do.

Unlike the other two violations, ghosting will not result in a ban. However, if you have been accused of ghosting, and we investigate and determine that the ghosting was unnecessary, your ghosting will be made public knowledge (let me explain!).

Our current matchmaker form mechanism is to have two phases. Phase 1 is for one sex to fill out the form and say things about themselves. Then the responses, except for usernames, are made public on a spreadsheet. Phase 2 is for the other sex to rank their preferences. After Phase 2, we match people based on rankings.

So, in the future, all public Phase 1 response spreadsheets will have a "ghosting" column, where the values will be the number of times you have ghosted somebody in the past. So if you've ghosted two matches before, you'll have a "2" in the column, and the people ranking their preferences will see the 2. Again, your username won't be on the public spreadsheets.

If you ghosted someone in the past, but make a new account, again we can figure that out easily. You won't be banned, you'll just have your old ghosting count attached to your new responses.

I hope this resolves issues surrounding ghosting. People who heavily dislike ghosting can avoid those with a history of ghosting, those who ghost for legitimate reasons are free to do so, and we don't set the precedent of banning undesirable behaviors (which can lead to huge slippery slopes). And if there are other undesirable/rude behaviors, we can apply this same mechanism to those as well.

Thanks to /u/violaswallet for the idea; I was completely stuck on figuring this out.

Have a blessed day!
