About two days ago my orange car has started dragging litter out of the box!! He knows how to bury.

Does anyone know why he could be just literally DIGGING the litter out of the box? Could this be stress related? I have had this same litter box for him for about two years now and he has never done this until the past few days and it’s driving my crazy. If anyone could give advice it would be greatly appreciated.
