I recently adopted a 7-months old cat almost a month ago and she's been quite slow to get used to me. The first week she wouldn't come out from under the bed, but in the past few weeks she's been more openly walking around. She will still run away if I make the slightest motion or noise that I am moving towards her, but I was being hopeful of the process. I remained passive about making contact or otherwise interacting with her.
However just now, while she was walking around, I held my hand out to her from maybe 6 feet away and she... hissed at me? It completely threw me for a loop since this is the first time she reacted that way. She then continued walking around the room like it didn't happen and when I called to her and held out again, sure enough, another hiss. I thought I was respecting her space and just inviting her to initiate contact. Honestly, I'm starting to grow disheartened if after a month of me giving her nothing but space, she would still react in that way.
Is my passive stance incorrect? Is there something I should be doing to encourage a more positive response?
