The back round- I have 8 cats, me, my husband, and our roommate before she moved out all work together to rescue cats and have been for 10 years. TNR, hand raising kittens, adopting out cats. The ones with medical issues or didn't get adopted out but where friendly we kept.
We have a good grasp on keeping the peace, making sure everyone has their spots, medications, enough litter boxes, vet visits but this issue has stubbed us.
Last month I bought a new litter box to replace an older one that needed to be retired. The new one was way bigger and I couldn't fit the other litter box next to it anymore so I moved the smaller one to a new location. Still the same number of litter boxes so it shouldn't have been an issue.
The problem is the new location we moved it to has made it litter box #1. We have enough that even with 8 cats, going a day without scooping isn't the end of the world. Not this one.
(Possibly triggering joke ahead)
My husband calls this litter box pearl harbor because it's always getting bombed. A day without scooping means this box just needs to be dumped. And they keep peeing right in front of it. We think it's a territory thing.
We have tired moving other litter boxes closer, changing the litter box to a bigger one, cleaning with bleach, vinegar, and other cleaners to try and get the marked smell out so maybe they will stop trying. We even moved the litter box completely but they will just pee on the floor where it was.
I'm out of ideas so I have come here for advice
We don't even know who is doing it because we haven't caught them yet. We got close once.
Me and my husband were high as kites watching a movie when a pee puddle started moving toward us. (Our house as a slight lean) I jumped up to grab the mop, he started grabbing the blankets and pillows off of the floor and telling Tator Tot "no don't jump down there! There's peeeee!!" I came back and cleaned it up. Well, I asked who did it. We both realized we were so focused on other things we didn't look over to see who did it lol. We know it's not Tot at least.
