Cat STILL potties on the WALLS of new, larger litter box

Post Body

Hello!

I had previously been using a large top-entry litter box and decided to treat us to a Black Friday deal on an even larger, self-cleaning Petsafe (the no cover option).

Frida has always preferred to squat toward the sides/back/front of the boxes (INSIDE, not outside) but it’s never been a huge problem for ME as the previous boxes were covered ones (contained the sight/smell decently). I thought for SURE an overall larger box would mean she would start aiming for the center as there is more room, but she is still aiming for the walls, and especially for the rake that sits at the back of the box :/ I am now on poo/pee smear lookout every day.

I guess my question is, what can I do? To repeat, this box is LARGER than any she has previously had, just doesn’t have a cover/high walls. I saw another person had this problem on a similar sub and the only suggestions were to get a larger box. That does not seem to be the issue here, and I live in a micro studio apartment where the spot its at is the ONLY spot I can put a litter box unfortunately, and we are now at absolutely max size for the spot. Maybe there’s a DIY apparatus I could finagle to encourage her away from the sides? Any suggestions appreciated, including “sorry dude you’re realistically probably just on smear duty for the rest of time!”

EDIT: She has recently been to the vet and has a full clean bill of health! Her poos are very healthy, I just would like them not against the wall of her box if that’s even possible ;)
