I have a 4 month old kitten and a 10 year old cat that have thankfully started to get along after about a month. Now that they occupy the same space, I'm suddenly having an issue with the dry food and I'm not sure what to do.
The older cat is overweight and I'm doing my best to help her slim down, so I have been keeping track of her dry food intake daily (she doesn't eat canned) according to my vets advice. The kitten appears to love the older cat's dry food and will eat whatever she finds. She's always got her kitten dry food available as well as a can in the AM.
I have been trying to have set feeding times for the older cat and separate them, but the older cat is a grazer and wont eat it all at once. Then she complains because she's stuck in the other room alone when I'm in the other (I only have 2 rooms). If I open the door and don't watch the kitten she will go and eat everything that's left.
I have tried 3 different kinds of kitten food and the Purina adult cat food is still her preference apparently.
I keep her out of my bedroom while asleep, so I've started leaving the older cat's food out at night. Is that even right?
Am I doing anything right here? Should I also ask the vet? I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.
