My cat has become much more vocal after a move, is this normal?

For context this cat was my girlfriend's mom's, she had him for 3 years and he was always super quiet. You wouldn't even know they had a cat unless you saw him playing with their dog or when he came out of his napping spots.

My girlfriend and I moved about 4 months ago from San Antonio to Austin. After we moved out he started peeing in the bed, we think it's a mix of a more rambunctious dog in the backyard and her dad getting drunk and being an ass hole to the cat, making the cat too scared to leave the room it was in to use it's litter box.

It came to a head when the dad drunkenly grabbed the cat and tossed him outside. Thankfully her mom noticed and was able to find him after about 2 hours. After that I was done and told my girlfriend that we're taking him in, she was on the same page and we got him the next weekend.

It took about 2 weeks for him to adjust but now he's a completely different cat. Like I seriously wouldn't realize it was him if I didn't know it was. He's much more social, playful, doesn't bite when he gets over stimulated from pets like he used to, but the biggest change is his meowing. I think I have heard him meow maybe 10 times before moving him, now he's super vocal. He kept waking me up last night when I fell asleep on the couch from walking up and meowing in my face.

I don't necessarily mind his meowing, other than my girlfriend works from home and his mowing can be distracting sometimes. Is this behavior normal? Like I know it's because he feels safer than he did before, I just would have never expected such a change.
