A non-UK friend of mine was asking about the meaning behind Bonfire Night. I started to wander down memory lane, recounting tales of my school's Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, and long story short, she thinks I was part of a cult! And now that I think about it, fair play, it's certainly cult-adjacent behaviour.
We'd engineer life-size effigies of your man Guy, and parade them in front of a semi-inebriated crowd of parents and teachers, with a prize given to the most lifelike depiction, before tossing them into a fire, watching with glee as our replica terrorists slowly cremated.
Is that normal? Does this still happen? Are we the baddies?
