First thing I looked forward to once I got on the plane is to eat pork. It felt like a huge relief to live no more under taboos of my former religion. The flight attendant asked me, “what can I get you for breakfast?” Immediately and so confidently I said, “Pork!” She had a big grin on her face, pinched my cheek and said,”we have no pork for you” then she proceeded to tell me what was on the menu for breakfast and I made my choice. Once the plane boarded from Paris taking off to JFK airport, the flight attendant asked me what I needed for a beverage. “Beer!,” I answered right away. They told me that I had to pay for it and so I was content with orange juice. I dozed off and woke up to find some beer waiting for me. It was a generous American who decided to grant this young man from Egypt his wish and till now my eyes get teary every time I remember how I was received with exceeding kindness coming to America. In America I found my way to all kinds of foods that were prohibited for me in Egypt: country ham, Oscar Mayer ham, pig pickin, honey glazed ham, and I can’t say how thankful I’m for my freedom in America: God bless America! Land of the free! America has been my home since 1992. It’s the only home I have and the best home I have ever had for 30 years.
