At what point did rap music become popular and well loved, even adopted among Caucasian people?

Post Body

In 1993 in the dorm I (an Egyptian here) was watching some nice American TV in the TV room. I found myself enjoying some things like, black coffee, black coffee no sugar no cream. In those days I would hear comments like, โ€œItโ€™s either music or itโ€™s rapโ€ from nice older Southern folks. But now rap has taken a different twist: even white people now can sing rap and are popular stars. I have no choice but to appreciate rap since my son enjoys rap and he even writes some of the most inspirational rap I have ever read, and since we are all Americans as I always stress in the family I can always develop a taste for what is different and appreciate it to some degree or another.
