Here's the thought:
I try to do what is right in any given situation. I believe that by doing the right thing in the end I will benefit from it. When doing the right thing I tend to act upon things I understand to come to the most predictable outcome. I understand that there could be an afterlife but I don't understand that there WILL be an afterlife and therefore I shouldn't assume that there is an afterlife. If I were to assume there was an afterlife without understanding why that would be immoral. It would be immoral because I'm basing my actions on something I don't understand.
What do you think? I don't have strong feelings either way. I'm not sure if my logic makes sense and I want to make it the simplest argument possible because it's so easy to get off track.
Edit:
Alright here's another way of looking at it since, admittedly, right now it's one sided.
I think believing in an afterlife makes me a happier person. The idea that I my life will continue after this one comforts me/(benefits me in some way) and therefore makes me happier than I would be otherwise. If a person's effectiveness is based on their well being and that belief makes them feel better then it is moral to believe in an afterlife. It is moral to believe in an afterlife because it makes me a happier person.
