Planning on Upgrading from my iPhone 5s. What phone should I go for?

I'm honestly thinking of a Galaxy s8, since I'm interested in getting an android phone. Plus, Samsung has a trade-in offer, which my phone qualifies for, which will give me at least $150 discount and up to $300. The only thing holding me back from getting a non iPhone is literally imessage, which I use to communicate with my roommates and some friends.
Are there other phones I should take a look at? With the price after the discount, the S8 (unlocked) will be cheaper than a OnePlus 5.
