Not trying to be totally obtuse or anything here but sometimes when I drive around and see larger detached houses (4-5 bedrooms) that are completely stunning I ask myself, how do people afford this?
Not just the houses but the clear home extensions, the pristine gardens, the numerous pricey vehicles sat out front and so on. It baffles me (which is perhaps my folly!).
There can’t be that many footballers and high earners around. Maybe I’m just a perennially broke human being but I own my home (a comfortable two bed cottage flat, with lovely neighbours thankfully) and my partner and I earn fairly average salaries each. I can’t see how I (or anyone) could ever afford these houses and cars and everything else.
Am I just being silly? Is there just more money and high-enough earners around than I care to think?
Credit rating. It's called a high credit rating. Some of these mortgages are expected to run for the entirety of their lives. The amount of people who live in a paid off house rather than paying mortgage or rent is TINY. Even amongst the rich because they're expected to live in something that much more expensive.
My brother's SO grew up in a paid off house and despite her mom being a pretty low end office worker it just drastically changed how she and her sister grew up cause it just leaves so much more money on the table each month.
Society is based on encouraging people to live beyond their means and exploit those below them to fund that.
