Is it wrong to prefer animals over people?

Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of folks caring more about the company of animals, and I count myself among them. Honestly, I find it way more enjoyable to connect with animals than with people. Yet, I often hear people say that this is wrong. Why is that? What’s your take on it?
