Weird things said by a stranger . . .

Post Body

Does anyone else have a mind-drawer of weird and random things a stranger once said to you? I keep these filed away and sometimes they come to mind and make me laugh.

For example, about twenty years ago, I was out at a public event (street fair or something?) with my daughter, then around five. She was usually dressed in cute little outfits with pigtails or a bow in her hair, etc. We were looking at something, but it was time to move on so I said “Okay, buddy—let’s go see if we can find Daddy.” Or something to that effect.

The middle-aged woman we had been talking to or around said to her “Oh! Is your name Buddy?”

I think I smiled and said something like “Uh, no—I just call her that.”

And we moved off.

It made me laugh then and it still makes me laugh to think that this woman thought I’d named an adorable little girl “Buddy.”

Now my daughter is grown and out on her own, but this morning I said to my dog “Okay, buddy. We need to go downstairs.” Or something similar. And my mind drawer popped open and and thought in a sappy sweet voice “Oh! Is your name Buddy?”

That’s such a funny and wholesome memory! It's amazing how those random, seemingly small interactions can stick with us for so long and make us laugh out of the blue. The fact that your brain filed that moment away and now pulls it out in situations like talking to your dog is priceless! It’s like your mind has a little "random comments" drawer that pops open at the most unexpected times.
