I live in a room detached from the main body of the house and have to walk outside to get into the main house if I wanna use the bathroom. It's great most of the time because of the privacy, but I hate going outside at night because I'm so paranoid. I have intrusive thoughts about creepy things whenever I go out. I just went outside just now and was feeling all freaked out, but when I came into the living room, I see the 4 cats I live with turn to look at me. They all look so peaceful and relaxed, and they all are very affectionate with me. It makes me feel safe. Generally speaking, living with pets has helped my anxiety and mental problems a lot.
