I just feel like a bunch of people go to gyms. There's a gym that opened near me about 5 years ago and the parking lot is always full.
Is this something that started as a trend recently? Or has society always been like this? Or is it actually not trendy and it's just the people in my area who go to the gym?
Before 2020 did a lot of people go to the gym? Before 2010 did a lot of people go to the gym?
Between the 70s and the mid 00s there was a gradual decline in fitness culture and only a dedicated subset of people really did it. The current wave of fitness culture actually has its roots in online anime culture as people realized that working out is something involving numbers in a room and tried to rise above the nerd stereotype. This got an extra boost with the rise of Marvel movies (especially Thor obviously) and has gradually made its way into the realm of regular people.
A lot of new fitness goers are weird to diagnosed autistic and work out cause it helps manage their mental issues, including myself.
