I decided I was using reddit too much so I spent some time away, here are my thoughts.
First of all, I use my phone much less often without reddit so that was very nice to be able to cut back on doom scrolling. I was unfortunately unable to quit social media completely, I rarely use Twitter and Instagram so I used them a little more than usual.
I used to think people on reddit exaggerated how bad Twitter is, because I used Twitter and didn't really have any problems, but that's because I exclusively used my feed only and no other part of the app. Scrolling through trending/recommended topics/tweets is awful, it's always the exact opposite of what I want to see.
Instagram isn't quite so bad, but it still sucks because you click on one post and it will fill your feed with the same, no matter how you try to balance it out by clicking something different or clicking the "don't show me this" button. And comments are basically non-existent when scrolling numerous posts.
Despite all those complaints, it's not like I'm stoked to be back on reddit. The only reasons I came back to reddit is for music, book, and show recommendations. And chatting, it's nice to be able to interact with people if I'm feeling a little lonely.
Taking a break was very good for me, it allowed me to recognize what I want from reddit and what from reddit I want to cut out of my life.
