I have been trying to troubleshoot this issue for almost 3 years now. I hope maybe one of you has seen this before and can help guide me toward fix. When I am slowing down, turning, or braking at low speeds, I hear/feel a grinding/rubbing sound from one of the front wheels on my truck.
- The frequency of the sound follows the wheel speed not the engine RPMs.
- It is more prevalent in wet or cold conditions. It almost never happens in the summer.
- It occurs fairly often. On a day when the conditions allow it to happen, it occurs about once every 5-7 times I turn at slower speeds or stop.
- Lasts about 3-6 seconds normally. I can sometimes get it to persist if I hold my current speed/turn when I hear it start.
- It started around 20k miles
Service History:
- 24k Miles - Dealer replaced Steering Gears under warranty - no improvement
- 24k Miles - Replaced IWE Solenoid and wheel hub - no improvement
- Issue did not present over summer
- 58k Miles - Issue resurfaced in winter. Requested dealer look into the IWE solenoid "hat" introduced in the next MY to prevent water leaking into the IWE system. Dealer says the updated part "Does not apply to this vehicle" and said that it may be a failing seal at one of the hubs, cannot pinpoint which one.
- 64k Miles - Dealer checked hubs, solenoid, vac lines, worked on something (i cant remember and can't find paperwork. The original sound persisted and now introduced a VERY loud scraping/grinding sound at highway speeds. Sounds like a worse version of original issue.
- 64k Miles - Dealer inspected for the new sound, and found a slice in the vac line going into the IWE solenoid. New loud sound fixed, original sound at slow speeds and while turning persists.
Can anyone here help me identify the issue or maybe point me in the right direction to investigate? It's really frustrating and it is taking a toll on my time off work and such to keep getting this issue looked at. Please let me know if you have any additional information and thank you for your time.
