Ac compressor

Just got a new ac compressor on my 03 Yukon. Seemed like it’s backwords or something. When the air is blowing without the ac button engaged the compressor is on and when I turn the ac button on for cool air the ac compressor is off. What is happening? Has anybody had this problem before?
