Use of Ethanol

Hey guys. I am driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Wagon 2.4L AT. It says on the car manual that use of 10% ethanol may be used in my car. However, I am told by my mechanic (who works for VW) that he doesn’t recommend E10 because it may cause harm at the engine.
Does it really harm the engine? Especially that my car old and it has nearly 280,000kms on the clock.
