Hey guys, Iā€™m buying a second hand car and totally lost on what I should do once I find a decent one. How do I not get scammed, handle the exchange of cash, RACV check?, RWC?

  • Iā€™m in Melbourne / Vic
  • buying from private sellers

From memory it was about $250. The guy was pretty switched on and knew that something was off when he lifted the bonnet. It was an interstate purchase and we were set on the car so it was a bit of a no brainer to avoid massive costs later on if something was about to let go. Fortunately old mate told us it was a hard no, even told the guy he was going to report him for fraud.

Most definitely get standard checks done, but also if convenient get a mobile mechanic to give it the once over. If you're serious about a car it's worth the money.

An almost too perfect Subaru outback we were about to purchase about 5 years ago ended up having the instrument cluster and computer swapped out and hoses bound up with tape. Car actually had over 3x the km on the advertisement.
